Born in Cape Town in 1958, Jonathan Zapiro couldn’t imagine a career in cartooning, so he studied architecture at the University of Cape Town. When he couldn’t imagine a career in architecture, he tried switching to Graphic Design and promptly got conscripted to serve his compulsory two years in the then South African Defence Force (SADF).
