Our next legend is for barbeque lovers, which we call Brrrraai in South Africa. Here we bring you a real South African braai experience with a Braai Master at one of these phenomenal outdoor venues; Oudekraal Beach or Silvermine Nature Reserve.

Who is Jan Braai?

Jan Braai was born in Stellenbosch, where he was schooled and attended University, walking away with minor scars and an Honours Degree in Accounting. He later qualified as a Chartered Accountant after completing his articles in the financial services department of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Cape Town.

But all those numbers weren’t adding up.

At the age of 25, Jan decided a change was in order and for the past 11 years Jan has been at the head of the National Braai Day initiative, aiming to unite all 50 million South Africans around fires on 24 September each year. During this time Jan also acquired two MBA’s, his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town and his Masters in Braai Activities at the University of Life.

The New York Times named National Braai Day as ‘one of the most significant cultural celebrations in the world’ and the Economist recently published an article on the impact of the day. Ever increasing in popularity, an estimated 15–20 million South Africans take part in National Braai Day celebrations on 24 September each year.

Jan Braai is the author of three best selling books on the topic of Braai, which have been translated into a numerous languages and published internationally.

He is the presenter of a highly acclaimed television show ‘Jan Braai vir Erfenis’ now in its 10th season and a columnist for Beeld, South Africa’s largest Afrikaans daily.

An active sportsman, Jan spends his free time around a fire, riding a bicycle, paddling or running.

He’s just the guy to give you an ultimate South African braai experience.
